Description: Selling my beloved Rabbit pickup to move on to another project. It has had an engine rebuilt about 50k miles ago (previous owner). It has a five-speed Jetta manual transmission that shifts perfectly. I get nearly 50 mpg out of it (the worst I’ve gotten so far was 42, typically it’s 46-47mpg) and it gets lots of looks. I have a clean Alabama vintage vehicle title in hand.
So first what’s great about it:
The body: It’s never been in an accident. There is no rust of any significance. I spent nearly $1500 on having three rust spots repaired at a local body shop. They matched the paint beautifully. Just don’t park it in a ditch and it’ll stay rust free forever. I also spent a small fortune on a roll pan (and getting the paint matched) for the rear to replace the ugly rear bumper. It cleans up the rear of the truck REALLY nicely.
The bed: It’s got bedliner in the same color as the body and has really protected it well. The sides of the bed have cargo rails that are screwed down. They’re very classy looking and make a HUGE difference in the overall truck of the appearance.
The suspension: I’ve installed a completely new set of struts/springs in the front and the rear axle has been flipped to be over the leaf springs to lower it as well. It gets LOTS of compliments. I have a matching set of springs/shocks for the rear if you want to convert it from leafsprings (what I originally got the set to do). I also have the original U-bolts and hardware so you can flip the axle back to the top of the leafs if you’d like.
The paint: The previous owner had it resprayed in the factory color around a decade ago, so it is nice and glossy with minimal road debris scratching, etc. As you can see, it cleans up NICELY. The bed is sprayed with a matching liner. The blacked out front center section is a spray-on rubber-like protective coat that 3M makes. It can be peeled off at any time. I sprayed it on about 3 weeks ago because I have been driving it to Birmingham for work and wanted to protect the paint from bugs.
The tires and wheels: The tires are 95%. The front ones have less than 1000 miles on them, the rear ones have around 2000. The wheels are nice Jetta 5-spoke wheels. I’d recommend getting them beadblasted, it’d look very classy.
What needs work: The door seals don’t leak but they’re really old. The rear window doesn’t slide easily at all but doesn’t leak. The tailgate is slightly warped so it closes fine but one corner rattles a tiny bit. The blower fan is burned out, so no A/C. Heat and defrost still work fine as long as the vehicle is in motion (forcing air through).
I’ve been using it as my daily driver to Birmingham all week while my turbo diesel Jetta was in the shop and it’s 100% reliable for commuting. It starts right up and gets great MPG.
It’s registered with Vintage Vehicle plates, which you can transfer for a very small fee. They exempt you from emissions and safety inspections and registration renewals. Once you transfer the registration to you, that’s it. You never have to renew them.
I’ve got a camper shell for it and the mounting clamps that I bought from a guy in Chattanooga and will include that and the foam sealant and fiberglass repair stuff I bought for it. I’ve also got the original front and rear bumpers with mounting hardware that I’ll include too.
Other stuff I have for it: replacement black plastic grill for the passenger side, full Bentley service manual, spare water pump, replacement set of shift bushings), front duckbill chin spoiler (was $65)
I’m interested in trades, but only for a few specific vehicles. Craigslist wont let me list them in the ad (it thinks I’m spamming keywords) so the list is in the pictures of the Rabbit.
Cash only, local pickup only. I will not accept Paypal, wire transfer, money orders, or cashier’s checks. I do not need help selling it.
